Change the art

If you are an artist of any kind and thats how you make a living, or that is how you wish to make a living, why is it that you chose such a career?

What it is for me is that art can inspire and change the world.  Just think of the picture of the student standing in front of the tank in Tianenmen Square.  There are countless images that have caused change in the world.

Today the market is absolutely flooded by images, thanks to digital photography.  Now all I see on my twitter feed are the instagram and hipstamatic pictures.  There is a little truth that says you shoot what you want to see and what you love.  What we do with our art is a great reflection of who we are.  Thats assuming that what we shoot is doing what we want to do.  Some of us are stuck with shooting assignments that are not as favorable as to what we would like.  We have to put food on the table so we take what we can get.

What if though, we used art for the other side of the spectrum.  Instead of creating ugly pictures and calling them artistic just for entertainment use...  What if we did something with the art? What if we changed something?

Why are we so limited to what we can do these days?  There is this mental ceiling that we have and we tell ourselves that there is so much that we can do.  With digital technology the value of art as we know it has gone way down.  Why buy something that can be so easily recreated?  It stinks but its absolutely true.  There is a niche that isnt being filled however.  Get rid of that ceiling and do what has never been imagined.  Get past what you are told you can and can't do.

Use what you discover and then do something good with it.  Could we get past the shallow use of media and make a dent in the world.

Do so however you may choose, let your conscience be your guide.
